Dirty Dancing is at Leeds Grand Theatre from 5 August

The scriptwriter Eleanor Bergstein also wrote the script for the original 1987 film – and has added extra scenes for this Karl Sydow production, which will star Michael O’Reilly in his professional debut, alongside Kira Malou and Simone Covele.

Having the time of his life, Michael plays Johnny Castle and Kira is cast as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman.

Set in 1963, the story is one of 17 years old Frances, who whilst on holiday with her family, wanders off to come across an all-night dance party and is instantly mesmerised by the dance and in particular by Johnny.  Frances’ (Baby’s) life is forever changed as she and Johnny get together both on and off-stage, two people whose backgrounds are so contrasting and whose summer will never be forgotten.

Since its Australian debut in 2004, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage has become a worldwide phenomenon with productions staged in the USA, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and throughout Europe, consistently breaking box office records. Recent tours in France, Germany and Australia were all sell out smash hits. Having originally opened at the Aldwych in London in 2006, its £15 million advance broke the record to make it the fastest selling show in the history of West End theatre.  The first ever UK tour of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage launched in 2011 and then returned to the West End in 2013 playing at the Piccadilly Theatre in London, prior to launching a second UK and Ireland tour. A further tour and West End Christmas season followed in 2016/17.
