Green Eggs and Ham at Leeds Central Library on 15 February

This is opera for all ages from the age of 4!  It’s perfect if you want to introduce your offspring to this art form, because it’s a family show and is touring the north of England until 22 March.

Children can experience live opera music and singing at close range at Leeds’ Central Library on 15 February.  Inspired by Dr Seuss’ children’s classic, Robert Kapilow has composed this bitesize opera which tells the comic tale of Sam-I-Am.  Sam-I-Am tries to persuade a grumpy grouch to try a plate of green eggs and ham, demonstrating that you never know what something is like until you try it.

For 45 minutes, a nine-piece orchestra will accompany sopranos Susie Buckle and Gabriella Cassidy as they bring Sam-I-Am’s mission to the stage.  Before the performance, there’ll be an interactive session to introduce everyone to the instruments, the music and the themes.

Jacqui Cameron, Opera North Education Director, said:

“Dr Seuss books have remained firm favourites of both children and grown-ups over the years. By staging a musical version of Green Eggs and Ham, we aim to give youngsters the chance to experience operatic singing in a fun, light-hearted way while enjoying an engaging story from a master storyteller. We hope it could even be the spark that inspires a lifelong love of opera’s unique combination of music and drama.”

The Library is offering two performances – at 11 a.m.and 2 p.m.  Tickets are available online with ticket prices from £6.

Opera North Families Programme is generously supported by The Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation and The Sir James Knott Trust.
