The City Varieties Youth Theatre and The Wizard of Oz

The City Varieties Youth Theatre (CVYT) will perform The Wizard of Oz at City Varieties on 27 and 28 July, with an orchestra including musicians from Leeds College of Music.

This will be the Youth Theatre’s seventh full scale musical, this time one which few people will fail to recognise, given that it is considered to be one of the greatest films in cinema history.

CVYT Artistic Director, Lizi Patch, said: “I am delighted to be directing the Wizard of Oz. Each year the challenge is to find a musical that both suits the large and very capable cast, and works on the beautiful but bijou City Varieties Stage.  From the initial idea to the first performance, the cast, creative team, learning team, band and technical crew make my job a pleasure.”

Since its inception in 2012, CVYT’s alumni have gone on to train at Ballet Rambert, the National Youth Theatre Ensemble and Pineapple Studios.  Others have appeared on Game of Thrones and worked with Opera North and Phoenix Dance Theatre.   That’s not bad, considering that to join CVYT, no experience is required, just enthusiasm and a will to try.  CVYT is all about nurturing individuals, building their skills and developing their ensemble participation – all under the watchful eyes of professional artists who become friends.

Students have declared their pride in being a part of the Youth Theatre, a learning experience they actually enjoy and thrive on, alongside people of like mind.
