‘Merrion Centre Goes Green’ is Celebrating Sustainability

The Merrion Centre is celebrating sustainability from 22 to 26 October.  100% of the Centre’s waste is now diverted from landfill via recycling or an energy recovery facility through its new partnership with Forge recycling.

The Merrion Centre and Town Centre Securities’ commitment to sustainability will be reflected on each day of the week, through promoting ways in which shoppers can enjoy a greener life which promotes their own health and wellbeing, delivering tips and educational events under the themes of Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Rejuvenate and Renew.  This follows Town Centre Securities Citipark’s October offer of discounted car parking in return for plastic bottles.

Monday 22nd October Cradle & All is an independent second hand baby shop where pre-loved travel systems, cots, pushchairs are specially refurbished to be given a new lease of life. All profits from the sale of baby equipment support the Leeds Shopmobility service. Cradle & All will take a prime spot on the main mall to show shoppers how they can help reuse baby equipment, up-cycle items as well as supporting a great local cause.

Tuesday 23rd October The British Heart Foundation (BHF) rely on donations of clothing, books, ornaments and other miscellaneous items. As vintage remains a favourite consumer trend, BHF will be encouraging shoppers to donate items as part of the week.

Wednesday 24th October Forge Recycling collect and segregate waste from both the Merrion Centre and its tenants on a daily basis. They’ll be on the main mall with a mini ‘recycling transfer station’ which will categorise items and help shoppers to turn them into a crafted flower to take away.

Thursday 25th October To help shoppers ‘rejuvenate’, PureGym will host special FREE exercise sessions in the garden. The NHS Sexual Clinic will be on site giving FREE advice and contraception and Holland & Barrett will be giving away FREE samples of natural food supplements.

Friday 26th October CityConnect will be on hand giving advice on cycling and cycle safety and are providing a FREE bike security tagging service. West Yorkshire Travel Plan Network and Walkit will be providing top tips on how to lower carbon footprint through sustainable travel and to help consumers make informed decisions.

Charlotte-Daisy Ziff, Head of CSR for Town Centre Securities:

‘Merrion Goes Green Week is a proud milestone for us; not only is it a first event of its kind in the City, it also provides a platform to educate shoppers on their impact on the environment, inspiring them to recycle everyday items, whilst also being mindful of their own health and wellbeing. Following the recent success of Citipark’s plastic bottle recycling trial, it cements and celebrates our commitment to sustainable practices that are imperative for driving preservation of our environment and health in our community.’
