RMUK's Lavish New Salon Launches in Leeds
Greeted by the doorman and ushered inside, the simple yet sophisticated monochrome themed entrance comes into view and the glittering chandelier style lighting hanging from the ceiling catches my eye. Stepping across the mosaic flooring towards the slick counter-style reception, the welcoming faces of the staff are enough to throw all feelings of unease out of the window. Surrounded by crisp white walls, a sofa in soft light green with contrasting vibrant cushions and a neatly arranged display of products to rival any beauty goddess' collection, this is chic all over. This is RMUK's luxurious new salon.

Having been around since 1981, you've more than likely heard of RMUK and may have even paid a visit or two to its previous home down on Eastgate. As one of Leeds' oldest hair and beauty salons, the popular sanctuary has developed a glorified reputation throughout the City but its continuous existence for over 30 years despite emerging new salons in the area surely speaks for itself. After 15 years on Eastgate, the family run business recently relocated to a spacious three storey Georgian property on Great George Street and with the move, it transformed itself into something spectacular and something Leeds was definitely calling out for. Offering every treatment under the sun from facials and pedicures to massages and hair colouring, RMUK manages to meet every need of the beauty-savvy individuals of the City. Attending the launch event on 17th September, I eagerly joined fellow journalists and bloggers for an evening of sensual pampering and of course, a long-awaited nosey round the beautiful new premises.

As I was led up the staircase for the start of the tour, the walls changed to a calming mauve shade complimenting the grey striped carpet runner positioned on the stairs, which somehow manages to lure you up. Offering two private treatment rooms, RMUK adds a thoughtful touch to the salon catering for those who wish to have their therapies done in a secluded personal oasis away from the salon floor. Sitting directly opposite is the fully-equipped nail salon complete with a countless selection of polishes, from nudes to bright corals upon a stand-out glossy orange shelf, and a lush pedicure chair and remote controlled fire. Having been seated in one of their leopard print chairs, I opted for one of the popular OPI shades on offer and was ready to have my nails transformed as the heat from the fireplace let out a homely and cosy vibe and the members of staff joked that they 'never wanted to go home' at the end of the day.

Following the lavish red carpet to my favourite part of the salon; the relaxing area, decorated in rich browns and reds with bohemian style lanterns, brown leather chairs and a sweet smell in the air, the area is luxurious yet warm and inviting. There are two waxing rooms and a wet room with the current spray tan of choice being Sienna X, along with two other treatment rooms, one to which you can bring a friend and have treatments done simultaneously and another where you can peacefully indulge in a deep Guinot facial. Along with these indulgent brands, RMUK also use products by Aveda and Dermalogica. With inviting dressing gowns hanging on the doors and luxurious embroidered blankets in dimly lit rooms, this looked like the most relaxing haven for being pampered.

Heading up to the third and final floor, I was handed a glass of prosecco and welcomed into the uber-stylish bar and terrace area. Never before had I been to a salon with its own bar, let alone its own terrace, so this was all new to me. With an industrial style ceiling, a rustic wooden bar, seating and flooring, and metallic lighting, the bar had a totally unique and quirky touch with ‘cool’ written all over it. The patio doors open out onto a roof terrace with a black awning protecting us from the typical British weather, flowerpots on the silver tables and lanterns lighting up the outside area. With a yet-to-expand menu including hot drinks, soft drinks, fresh juices and alcoholic tipples, along with some tasty bar snacks, it would be wrong not to take advantage of the delicious sounding cocktails after an unwinding therapy. Sitting down in the bar for a break in between treatments, I fondly gazed over the appetizing selection of nibbles and listened to the relaxing tunes. What a perfect chill-out zone.

Next up, I was shown around the modern black and white themed hair salon before being treated to a relaxing shoulder massage followed by a much-needed hair revamp by Michelle, wife of Massi Maura, son of owners Roberto and Laura Maura who all help to run the salon. As Michelle began to style my hair, she excitedly spoke about the amazing transformation from the old salon to the new, commenting on just how much better it was and saying that once they found out about the spacious 3,500 square foot premises, they just kept generating more and more ideas on ways to make it even better. Having experienced it first hand, I think it's safe to say that they've made it pretty impressive.

What makes it even more impressive, is their unique chauffeur service, providing clients with lifts to their chosen destinations. Massi spoke about the salon, “Customers can pop in for a quick treatment, or spend the full day here having their hair done, enjoying a beauty treatment and then relaxing in the bar outside on the terrace with a drink of their choice, before jumping in our pamper cab and being dropped off at a location of their choice.” Its location in the heart of the City makes it equally ideal for an after-shopping treat or some self-indulgence before a night out with the girls - and better still, the pamper cab can drop you right in the centre of town without a hair on your head even moving!

As I got ready to leave with a fresh set of nails and some beautiful curls, I could only reflect on the evening in a positive way. From start to finish the service was faultless and I found myself raving about the glamorous new salon from the moment the doorman ushered me out. Much more than a salon, however, this a 3 storey beauty-filled experience that makes you want to come back. I will, most definitely, be back.
