The Sculpture Gallery is on the Balcony at the Corn Exchange – an independent gallery dedicated to three-dimensional work.
Since opening in April, 2022, this co-operative of owner-artists (David Iredale, Steve Williams, Mandy Long and Pete Donnelly) has been showcasing their own work, supplemented by a variety of guest artists on a monthly rotation.
Located in one of the City’s most iconic buildings, the Corn Exchange is a popular destination for those seeking independent outlets, encompassing art, fashion, design and food.
The Gallery has forged a reputation for displaying an eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary forms through a variety of mediums (stone, wood, plaster, ceramics, raku-fired paper clay etc.) which attracts the art-loving public and collectors alike. David and Steve also run Stone Carving courses in the Gallery’s studio in the piazza of the Corn Exchange. Over two days, participants are taught the fundamentals and proudly take home a finished piece.
A high-profile and exciting guest artist is scheduled for September. Graham High (www.grahamhighartist.com) has successfully explored many strands in his career. Graham is a painter, sculptor, a model maker/designer for museums and a published poet.
Over the years, he has mounted over 40 solo exhibitions in UK galleries, as well as exhibiting in Spain, Russia and Latvia. In 1994, he was elected a lifelong member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. In addition, he has enjoyed a parallel career in the feature film industry as an animatronic model designer, prosthetic make-up artist, design sculptor, creature effects co-ordinator and effects consultant, having worked on around 40 films. These include ‘Aliens’, the ‘Harry Potter’ series, ‘Babe’, ‘101 Dalmatians’, and ‘The English Patient’. He has been part of an Oscar and Emmy award-winning team several times and was awarded a personal BAFTA in 1998.
Graham: “I am particularly excited to have my work shown with The Sculpture Gallery. I take much of my inspiration from Yorkshire artists from the 1950’s onwards. What is it, I wonder, about Yorkshire that makes it produce such a continuous stream of wonderful sculptors?”
The Gallery owners are looking forward to many more exhibitions from their guests and engaging with more would-be sculptors on their courses. You can find out more about The Sculpture Gallery here.
