#theatrefor1pound Launched to Raise Money for The Arts

Victoria Smith has launched #theatrefor1pound to help artists and arts companies in Yorkshire, in particular Northern Ballet and Leeds Playhouse, at a time when our culture is being threatened like never before.

#theatrefor1pound encourages everyone to donate just £1 to help preserve live theatre performances. This modest sum recognises the struggle so many people are having during the pandemic, not asking for larger amounts but hoping that if everyone contributes, the impact will be hugely beneficial to our theatres and performers, as well as backstage and front of house staff.

Victoria says: “Our daughter Izzy is a student at The Academy of Northern Ballet on the Centre for Advanced Training Programme, the professional scheme. Students train in the same building as the Company, a unique set up that allows them to be immersed in the Ballet World. They have opportunities to watch Company classes and see choreographers and musicians at work. It’s a very inspirational environment. Therefore, being so involved, we have seen how this sector has been dramatically affected.”

Victoria continued: “With any performance, it’s not just the dancers that have been impacted by this situation but also musicians, costume/set designers, special effects, makeup, writers, choreographers, physiotherapists, conductors, actors, photographers,  advertising, box office staff, front of house, lighting engineers and the driver of the lorry who transports the set. The list seems endless! I want all students at Northern Ballet and at other schools to be successful in their ambitions.”

There’s no doubt that theatre provides an escape for its audiences, whether the performance is darkly thought-provoking or slapstickingly funny. Performers share their gift and we are glad of it. We don’t necessarily consider those who help to make it all happen. So – if you think £1 is a reasonable request, then please click here and anticipate your hard-earned freedom to enjoy live theatre once again.
