Leeds Gigs in October (and what the critics say)

Here’s a selection of  Leeds’ October gigs at some of our favourite venues – and what people say.

APRE at Hyde Park Book Club on 1st

 What people say about APRE:

“Frighteningly composed and confident for a band’s first step” DIY

“Endlessly curious art-pop…showing a fastidious eye for detail, the first sign of where APRE could lead – and it’s very exciting indeed.” CLASH

“Anthemic…a refreshing taste of what it is to be young and in love” The Line of Best Fit

Sebadoh at The Brudenell on 3rd

These indie-rock pioneers recently released their new studio album Act Surprised.  Here are the videos:

‘celebrate the void’

‘stunned’

‘sunshine’

‘raging river’

What people say about Sebadoh:

“The strongest Sebadoh release since 1996’s Harmacy” Pitchfork

“Sebadoh’s fire still burns brightly” Mojo

Psychedelic Furs at Stylus on 7th

Photograph by Maggie Butler

“Emboldened by the flamboyant moves of the frontman Richard Butler, fans began to flock to the front of the stage two songs into the set. By the time the sextet hit their groove on Highwire Days, barely ten minutes in, the Festival Hall resembled a student disco.”  The Times ★★★★ (2018)

“Four songs in and a previously seated Festival Hall audience rise as one – it feels like an organised, pre-arranged movement – and head for the stage to worship post-punk pioneers, the Psychedelic Furs. The staff stand helpless…”  The Independent ★★★★ (2018)

“… the 2017 incarnation looks and sound tremendous, a seamless six-piece creating a dense wall of noise reinforced by righteous saxophone skronk from the seemingly indefatigable Mars Williams.”  The Guardian ★★★★ (2017)

“Channelling the early swaggering sounds that made Oasis and Kasabian household names”  – TRASH MAG

Haelos at The Wardrobe on 24th

Photograph by Jeff Hahn

In conjunction with the release of their second album, Any Random Kindness, HÆLOS shared a new song, KYOTO, and the accompanying video.

What people say about Haelos:

“… Buried In The Sand maintains the nocturnal textures of Full Circle, and the same attention to sonic detail that made their debut so rewarding. Built on a clattering beat and ghostly vocals from various members, it’s also a reminder of how good this band is at depicting internal, psychological tension …” STEREOGUM

“… Kyoto has echoes of Radiohead production, vocal harmonies of Massive Attack and the twitching, insular instrumentals of Arca. It’s altogether quite a heady, claustrophobic piece of ambient trip-hop …” THE 405

Tickets are available here.

Cattle & Cane at Oporto on 27th

“Gorgeous, soaring, folk-pop anthems for passionate souls” – A Music Blog, Yea?

“They’re just going from strength to strength… check out their album Mirrors” – Tom Robinson

“There’s way more of a Fleetwood Mac influence than their earlier stuff and I love it” – The Independent

“The band’s live show is magical… get ready to clap your hands and sing along – it’s pretty much requisite at a Cattle & Cane show” – Metro
