Bundobust is Ten Years Old!

Back in summer 2014, Bundobust arrived in Leeds, just a few months before I arrived from the other side of the Pennines.

Mayur Patel and Marko Husak at their Bundobust Brewery

During my 3 years living in the City Centre, it became one of my favourite food places. It was somewhere I took friends and family when they were visiting. We looked forward to Bundobust takeaways during covid lockdowns (though we greatly missed the removal of Okra fries from the menu, we understood why – they are poor travellers).

I’ve taken dates there, on one of which I ate by myself as my date didn’t fancy anything on the menu (needless to say, there wasn’t a second date!) Thankfully, my now husband is just as obsessed with Bundobust food as I am. We have both also written reviews during our time as writers for Leeds Living.

Okra fries and beer

I was excited to be invited to their 10th anniversary party last week. After being treated with the Bundobust always friendly welcome, we quickly tucked into tasty food and thirst-quenching beers. On each table there was a fantastic comic detailing the journey from owners Mayur and Marko meeting, to an idea “being sparked that couldn’t fail”: Curry and Beer – from initial pop ups to successful collaborations with other local food and drink businesses, favourite dishes, outstanding specials (gobi toast being one of mine), to the opening of premises in Manchester and rave reviews from some famous food critics.

It’s encouraging seeing one of Leeds’ independents thriving, despite the challenges faced by hospitality during recent years. Bundobust’s name and reputation for flavour-punching tucker is, I believe, a big part of their success, as well as their welcoming and laid-back dining experience.
