Federal Cafe and Bar – Delivers On Its Promises

Federal cafe and bar has built a reputation as a reliable breakfast and brunch spot, known for quality coffee, fresh food and genuinely welcoming atmosphere.

Originally founded in Manchester in 2014 as a small neighbourhood cafe, Federal has grown steadily over the past decade, expanding its presence while staying true to its original ethos of simple yet well executed food, great coffee and service that makes you want to come back. Following its success in Manchester, the brand’s expansion was carefully considered and its Leeds opening in December marked another confident step forward.

Recently, a friend and I had the chance to visit Federal and experience it for ourselves. From walking in, the atmosphere was warm and friendly, yet still buzzing – exactly what you want out of a coffee and brunch venue. Despite being busy, it never felt rushed or chaotic. Straight off the bat, the staff stand out as friendly and attentive, even during their busier periods. Whether you’re popping in for a coffee to go or sitting down for a proper brunch, the service feels equally considered.

We chose to sit in and started with a caramel iced latte and a strawberry matcha. Both drinks were well made with quality products, but the highlight was Federal’s own, Fed Juice. It’s made with apple, banana, kale, pears, avocado, lime, ginger, coconut water and apple juice. This vitamin rich option works well alongside brunch as a lighter and healthier drink choice.

For food, the menu had a great selection of breakfast and all day brunch options, making it easy to cater to different tastes. We opted to go half sweet and half savoury, something I’d highly recommend if you’re visiting with a friend. The French toast arrived topped with macerated berries, white chocolate, almond crumble and whipped vanilla mascarpone. It was indulgent without being too overpowering or overly sweet.

On the savoury side, the halloumi & shrooms delivered exactly what you’d hope for – pan fried halloumi, garlic and thyme roasted mushrooms, perfectly poached eggs, with their very own Fedsauce and a dukkah mix on sourdough toast. A balanced, filling and full of flavour choice.

The food arrived promptly, with both high quality and presentation evidently being a priority. Everything was carefully plated, vibrant and appetising, reflecting the overall quality of the menu. Simple ingredients, done properly and served fresh.

The service throughout was excellent. Our server, Rose, was chatty and approachable, checking in at the right moments and offering helpful suggestions like recommending a coffee to go using Federal’s intriguing can machine, which allows freshly made drinks to be sealed and taken away. Leo, who assisted with ordering, was equally attentive and reassuring, confidently confirming that we’d made the right choices for both sweet and savoury dishes.

Overall, Federal delivers exactly what it promises. From the fresh and well presented food and varied drinks menu to the standout service and overall atmosphere, it’s clear why Federal has built such a loyal following. If you’re looking for a reliable breakfast spot or an all day brunch destination, Federal is well worth a visit. It truly lives up to everything it says it is.
