I am a huge fan of Asian cuisine, so when I got the chance to try out the new inhabitants of Northern Market, I knew I was in for a treat.
Settling in very nicely to their busy new home on Great George Street is Yuzu Street Food. It is the perfect backdrop for them; an intimate space with good vibes which needs some equally good food to match, right?

Founders Emily and Chris aspired to bring together their love for cooking and share Asian flavours with the street food scene in the UK.
Yuzu has a large selection on their menu, catering for everyone and anyone. There is definitely something for all; they even have a kid’s menu and a range of desserts to choose from. I followed the staff recommendations and tried out a few of their most popular dishes and I can say it was some of the best food I have had in a while.

The standout dish of the night was the Miso ramen. Now it’s getting a little chillier up here in Leeds, a warm bowl of soup and noodles is the ultimate comfort meal. The combination of chewy noodles in the rich miso broth was to die for. I can see why it comes recommended by the staff. The chashu pork belly was perfectly soft and added the right amount of saltiness to the dish. I honestly would have been content with just that.

A twist on a takeaway classic, the salt and pepper hash browns were a fun spin and added something different whilst still staying true to the flavours and textures of Asian cuisine. These were a big hit and a great sharing portion as a side, alongside other items on their menu. I also saw the loaded fries being served and may have to return to try them.

Another of my favourites was the bao buns. I tried both the Korean Pulled Pork and the Korean Fried Chicken. These were filled to the brim and as long as you have a napkin on hand, they are a must order. Both were saucy and flavourful, I liked that each one had a unique flavour, even down to its garnishes. Of the two, my favourite was the Korean crispy chicken. The bun itself was soft and fluffy, the chicken was indeed crispy and the garnish of ginger complimented it nicely.

The classic dishes did not disappoint either: the gyozas were perfectly crisp and generously filled and the Katsu curry was warm and hearty. I am a big sauce lover and was very pleased with the generosity of the sauce on this dish. Their Japanese curry sauce is fragrant and flavourful and sits perfectly on top of the fluffy, sticky rice. I know I’ve been raving about the meat dishes, but don’t worry – many items on their menu can be made vegan or vegetarian.
The staff themselves were super friendly, which added to the experience. They cook in an open kitchen, so if you want to catch them working their magic and making your food, try and grab one of the benches right outside.

Yuzu does not scrimp on their portion sizes; it is the perfect place to go with friends or family. Choose a few dishes and share them amongst you so you get to try all their most popular items and still leave feeling full. I must also add that each dish not only tasted wonderful but also looked incredible (it’s always nice to eat with your eyes first!)
The food and service were a wonderful experience, I can’t wait to come back and try more! Yuzu is a great combination of high-quality items paired with the casual nature of street food eating. They also have locations in York, Pocklington and Harrogate, and rumour has it a new location is opening in Sheffield, so keep your eyes peeled! I am still thinking about the Miso ramen…..
