Dan Cimmermann – The Fighters, at Gingerworks 16 February

Dan has exhibited widely throughout the UK since graduating with a degree in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan University. The emerging British artist has exhibited twice within the prestigious BP Portrait Prize, showcasing his colourful paintings and murals, a meeting of ‘street’ and ‘studio’, reflecting on British identity and a rebellion against societal rules of old.

Rave On

Layers of paint and pen serve to deface classical works of 18th century portraiture, Dan’s body of work expresses a dissatisfaction with the current system of politics and the use of wealth and power. He takes his inspiration from urban walls decorated by tattered posters, ads and graffiti.

Scrap On The Stairs

The Fighters is a series of figurative works presenting fighters in various forms, drawing from the moving figures of Universal Everything and the paintings of Helen Saunders and the Vorticists, inspired by the aesthetic of old beat-em-up video games – Street Fighter II, Tekken 3, Double Dragon. Further inspiration emerges from myth and legend, ‘Brits Abroad’ culture and the boxer as a working class hero. The Fighters looks at the immigrant as a fighter and deplores the dangers of illegal immigration.

The Fighters is at Gingerworks, 42a Park Place, Leeds LS1 2RY.
