Go to the Balcony in Leeds Corn Exchange and you’ll find a most unusual independent gallery, in that it is the only artist-led commercial gallery in the UK that is totally dedicated to 3D work.
Celebrating the Gallery’s 4th anniversary on 1st April, this collective of six sculptors – Pete Donnelly, David Iredale, Mandy Long, Steve Williams, Jay Gilleard and Drew Caines – own and run the Gallery, showcasing their own work, supplemented by guest artists on a monthly rotation. One of the City’s most iconic buildings, the Corn Exchange, is a popular destination for those seeking independent outlets.
The Gallery has built a reputation for displaying an eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary forms through a variety of mediums, which attracts the art-loving public and collectors alike. David Iredale: “We have a lot to celebrate, having built exciting relationships with many artists and collectors, and with the wider sculpture community. We have sold pieces locally, regionally and internationally.”
April’s Guest Exhibition involves two artists – Damon Price and Helaina Sharpley. Launching on Monday, 6th April (as a double celebration for the anniversary), they will exhibit throughout the month. Both are highly respected international artists; Damon, a figurative artist based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, creates bronze sculptures, working from wax and clay, often depicting human forms and wildlife subjects. His work can be found in private collections worldwide.
Helaina is an award-winning wirework artist working from her studio in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. She creates intricate and elegant wall pieces that cross the boundaries between drawing and sculpture.
With 65,000 people coming through the doors since opening, the Gallery owners are looking forward to a successful future, continuing to provide a stimulus for an evolving artistic community.
