Latch: Building Homes, Changing Lives – Your Chance to Make a Difference.

A Leeds charitable organization is quietly transforming communities and creating positive change across the City.

Latch, short for Leeds Action to Create Homes, has been refurbishing derelict and run-down housing for over 30 years in areas that need it the most: Chapeltown, Harehills, and Burley. Latch not only provides homes but also offers training and support, making a significant impact on the lives of those in need. However, Latch now needs your help to continue its transformative work.

Community Transformation Through Housing

Latch’s mission extends beyond renovating buildings; it’s about revitalizing neighbourhoods and giving people hope for a better future. The organization recognizes the challenges faced by people who struggle financially, especially amidst the rising cost of living. In 2023, these challenges have reached a critical point, with unaffordable rents and skyrocketing energy costs driving people into inadequate living conditions and even homelessness. Around 26,000 people in Leeds are grappling with housing insecurity, while approximately 4,000 houses remain empty, often becoming centres of antisocial behaviour.

The Urgent Need for Support

With only 19 days left to reach their minimum fundraising target of £450,000, Latch’s impact hangs in the balance. The organization set out to raise £650,000 and has managed to secure £350,000 so far. However, failure to meet this target means that six new homes for those in desperate need might not be realised, and the jobs of the dedicated staff and trainees working on renovation projects could be at risk.

A Community Effort with Global Impact

Lauded as a Big Issue Change Maker of 2023, Latch’s crucial work hinges on financial support from individuals who recognize the immense impact they can have on their community. The funds raised will be channeled into the purchase of six empty properties, which will then undergo a transformation into safe, secure, warm and comfortable homes. The process will involve the collaborative efforts of skilled staff working alongside trainees and volunteers. The trainees represent a broader Latch initiative, aimed at supporting the long-term unemployed. By providing construction skills training through participation in building projects, Latch empowers individuals with the tools they need for a fresh start in life.

How Your Donation Creates Change

The funds you contribute have a tangible impact. As an ethical investor you will have the opportunity to make a positive difference while also receiving a modest return on your investment. Socially responsible investors can potentially earn up to a 5% annual return, while local communities have the chance to unite and invest collectively.

As with any investment, there are inherent risks, but the rewards are immeasurable. This initiative isn’t just about raising walls; it’s about transforming lives. Over the past three decades, Latch has created 107 homes in the City, giving nearly 600 people a chance for a new beginning. Your donation also plays a crucial role in securing the jobs of Latch’s experienced staff, who collectively possess an impressive 24 years of home transformation expertise.

CEO of Latch James Hartley:

“These funds are absolutely vital to changing more lives in Leeds for the better and to keep the jobs and expertise of our staff – built up over many years. With these additional homes, we could help six more adults and three more children on top of the 568 people we’ve already helped over the past 12 years. Renovated houses also have benefits for the wider community, with derelict properties tending to be hubs of antisocial activity.

We’re really proud of the long legacy of positive impact we have on both individual lives and those of the communities in which we work. We appreciate that times are really tough right now but are so grateful for any help in sharing the message about our work and its impact.”
