Fearns – A Culinary Gem

Fearns at Leeds Dock beautifully highlights the best of Yorkshire for diners who are looking for exquisite, beautifully presented food with excellent service and a sociable ambience, encouraging animated conversation without losing the sense of intimacy.

Head Chef Jade Crawley‘s culinary expertise is ingrained in every aspect of the dining experience at Fearns. Having previously stamped her mark at Eat Your Greens and The Tetley, her creative approach to food is evident in each thoughtfully crafted dish.

It was a pleasure to see the inclusion of local beers on the menu, such as Kirkstall Brewery‘s Virtuous, not the only example of how Fearns’ pride in local produce and flavours.

Marinated seasonal vegetables kicked off the dining experience, offering a fresh and vibrant start to the meal. The presentation of the dish was visually stunning, hinting at the explosion of flavours to come. This was a testament to Jade’s ability to transform simple ingredients into a flavourful masterpiece.

Deep-fried smoked tofu with Thai basil, aioli, and chilli pepper jam was a standout vegan dish that showcased the versatility and creativity of plant-based ingredients. The golden-brown, crispy exterior of the tofu paired perfectly with fragrant Thai basil leaves, creating a beautiful harmony of textures and flavors. The accompanying aioli and chilli
pepper jam added depth and a delightful balance of creaminess and heat.

Sundried tomato hummus, flatbread, and goral olives offered a delightful interlude. The hummus was creamy and packed with flavors, while the accompanying flatbread and olives provided a satisfying crunch and a burst of Mediterranean goodness. It was a well-rounded and enjoyable dish that added variety to the dining experience.

Crispy oyster mushrooms with sage, polenta, and confit garlic sauce continued to impress. The dish featured a perfect marriage of textures, with the crispy mushrooms offering a delightful crunch against the smooth polenta. The aromatic sage and rich confit garlic sauce elevated the flavors to new heights, making this dish a true highlight of the meal.

Sticky toffee pudding

To conclude on a sweet note, the mini sticky toffee pudding with roasted apples, whipped tonka cream, toffee sauce, and rock salt was an indulgent delight. This dessert exemplified dessert indulgence, with its harmonious blend of sweet and salty flavors. The velvety whipped vegan tonka cream and the luscious toffee sauce elevated the sticky
toffee pudding to new levels of decadence. Roasted apples added a refreshing and fruity element, while the rock salt provided a touch of contrast that enhanced the overall experience.

As a vegetarian, I was delighted to find numerous options that went beyond the typical vegetarian fare. The dishes were beautifully presented, and the flavours were simply exquisite. Each bite was a symphony of taste, showcasing the culinary mastery of the chef.

Of course, we know that exceptional food is the priority, but standard of service always matters. Fearns boasts a friendly and helpful staff, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere without any sense of intrusion.

While the music may be a bit loud for some, it nonetheless contributes to the lively ambiance that encourages conversation and a sense of community. Fearns is the perfect place to gather with friends, indulge in delectable cuisine, and enjoy a memorable dining experience.

Overall, Fearns is a destination that showcases the best of Yorkshire while offering innovative and delicious dishes. With Jade Crawley’s expertise and dedication to sustainable practices, this is a place where culinary excellence meets community spirit, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike.
