Opera North Launches Restaurant, Kino

Kino’s doors are now open, showcasing some of our region’s best charcuterie and cheese, with a craft beer, wine and cocktail selection. The venue is all the more appealing for its location in New Briggate as part of the exciting development taking place there.

Kino occupies freshly renovated space below the Howard Assembly Room, a Grade-II listed building happily situated next to Leeds Grand Theatre. The initial offering of sharing boards includes produce from local independent producers – George and Joseph, Lishman’s, North Star Coffee Roasters, Bluebird Bakery, Latitude Wines, Northern Monk and Kitkstall Brewery. And in the coming months, we can look forward to guest chefs and longer-term kitchen residencies.

The first pop-up kitchen takeover is by MorMor, for a special supper club event on Saturday 23 July. Bookings are available now.

MorMor is no stranger to pop-ups, having hosted at Todmorden’s Yakumamu and Leeds’ Eat Your Greens. They’ve also taken temporary kitchen space at both Hatch in Manchester and Chow Down in Leeds. Diners can expect a small plates and big platters menu, with contemporary dishes created using fresh produce, with a sustainable ethos. All is inspired by the flavours of the Levant – think western Asia, the Med and North-East Africa.

Over 3 floors, the restaurant can seat 100 diners in a welcoming and relaxed space of clean lines. Obviously very handy for pre or post theatre, Kino is set to be a favoured venue whether you’re seeing a show or not.

Richard Mantle, General Director, Opera North:

“We can’t wait to open the doors to Kino this week and at long last welcome people to our own restaurant and bar. Following a complex and detailed redevelopment project, we believe Kino creates a vibrant destination in this beautiful historic building on a previously underused part of New Briggate. With Kino, we continue to do what we do best – entertaining through memorable experiences – adding seriously delicious food and drink to our repertoire. We are truly thrilled to partner with so many of the best local producers, and to welcome MorMor for Kino’s first pop-up supper club on 23 July.”

Hugo Moneypenny, MorMor:“ It’s great to be getting back into a kitchen following such a busy summer full of events, pop up residencies and being in festival fields. We can’t wait to get back to doing what we do best and doing it in the super exciting pop-up at Kino.”

Kino is open on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and all day on Fridays and Saturdays.
