National Grief Awareness Week 2023: 2nd – 8th December

This year, the campaign is all about creating stronger connections in our communities and raising awareness of the impact of grief through shared events – how we are all #BETTERTOGETHER.

The Good Grief Trust aims to normalise grief and get people talking, to break taboos and ensure grief becomes an easier topic to discuss and to provide guidance on what to say/do to help the bereaved.

By joining forces with local networks and volunteers from the non-health professional community, Better Together Café events will run throughout the week and across the country, inviting the bereaved and support services to join around the table. The objective of these cafe events is three-fold:

● to help share with local communities all the marvellous services available through The Good
Grief Trust;
● to help strengthen the relationship between The Good Grief Trust and grassroots networks;
● to help strengthen the relationships between local services ensure knowledge is shared.

On Saturday 2nd December Dr. Amir Khan, charity Ambassador, will launch the week-long event in
Bradford, at the charity’s very first Better Together Cafe.

On Wednesday 6th, a Better Together Cafe will take place in The House of Commons. The Speaker,
Sir Lyndsay Hoyle has supported the Sit With Hope campaign, and will place plaques on a special
bench, on the Terrace of The Houses of Parliament. Award-winning children’s author, poet,
presenter, political columnist, broadcaster and activist, Michael Rosen, will also be present to
support the charity and campaign.

On the final day, Friday 8th December, at 6pm, Cardiff Castle and Blackpool Tower will be amongst a
whole host of buildings lighting up, alongside hospitals, lighthouses, windmills, bridges, cathedrals
and council buildings. There will also be a minute’s silence at 6pm on the final day of the week to
reflect on a year of loss and in support of all those grieving across the country.
