The former Leeds Beckett student is bringing his new stand-up show to Leeds. Jake lived in the City for five years, so the gig is a particularly meaningful one for him.
Visually impaired and perpetually anxious, Jake is known across the comedy circuit for his witty anecdotal stand-up. His latest solo show will be an hour packed with hilarious stories and jokes. exploring Jake’s insecurities as someone just trying to be a good man in today’s world of toxic masculinity.
Neurotica explores themes of masculinity and mental health through stories from Jake’s real life as a visually impaired person, who was born and grew up in Tyneside with a disabled, working-class Dad.
The show, which had an acclaimed run at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe, tells the story of how Jake came to embrace confidence in being himself; a self-described “liberal artsy” type, something other than the typical kind of man who came out of the area he grew up in.
Jake: “I’m very proud of Neurotica. It’s a show that has been received really warmly by audiences at festivals so far. I think its an uplifting show about going against the grain and being yourself. I’m really excited to be able to share it with an audience in Leeds, a city I lived in for a long time and feel a real affinity for. I think Geordies and Leeds folk are very similar, both having their own very specific regional identities and sharing a working-class background, so I always love gigging in Leeds because the audiences get me in a way those in some other areas of the UK don’t!”
Jake has already seen success with ‘Neurotica’ at festivals across the UK such as the Durham and Brighton Fringes, as well as securing a four-star review (‘****’ Darkchat) and a nomination for Neurodiverse Review’s Visually Impaired Excellence Award at Edinburgh Fringe 2022.
