Reflections of an Indian Dancer: a Solo Performance by Sooraj Subramaniam – at Courtyard Theatre

Presented by Leeds’ Balbir Singh Dance Company, this is a beautiful blend of contemporary Western dance with classical Indian Kathak which encourages the audience to examine their own identity through movement and memory.

Sooraj Subramaniam will perform three exquisite solo pieces with his surprising monologue, drawing the audience into the world of the performer.  He grew up in Malaysia and trained in the classical dance styles of Bharatanatyam and Odissi, then classical ballet and contemporary dance.

His training continued in Australia, where he graduated from the Western Australia Academy for Performing Arts.  He has co-directed for Mudhra Dance Company and also taught the different dance forms.  In London, he trained in Kathak.

Sooraj:  “My work is an organic amalgam of these styles as I aspire to create pieces that are honest, relevant, and enjoyable.  I work in the intersection where contemporary dance and classical Indian dance techniques meet, continuously expanding my movement vocabulary and dance practice.”

Sooraj now lives in Belgium and continues presenting classical Indian dance solo work, as well as collaborating with companies and independent choreographers on dance commissions across Europe, with regular training and performance trips to India.
