Boojum Lands in Leeds – and you can’t miss it.

No – really – you can’t. It’s a glorious, welcoming splash of colour on Merrion Street that would be hard to ignore

Mexican eatery Boojum has enjoyed huge success across Ireland and has now chosen Leeds for its first UK mainland location. In the Merrion Centre, in the heart of the City, it offers sit-in, take away, click ‘n’ collect and delivery services. In this, its opening week, we went to Boojum to see for ourselves what all the hype is about. It wasn’t hard to understand.

The exterior of Boojum is brightly coloured and joyful, and the interior is just as vibrant. It’s a great spot for casual dining with lots of seating, but also a well-designed takeaway area.

The menu is based on a ‘build your own’ meal offer, with burritos, burrito bowls, tacos or salads as the base, and a choice of fillings to add to them. During our visit, we both had burritos, one filled with chicken, pinto beans and queso (plus all the salad and salsas on offer), and the other filled with barbacoa with black beans and queso.

The burritos were generous, made with 12-inch tortillas, and stuffed to the brim with fillings – they definitely don’t skimp on anything! A nice touch is that they make sure all the fillings are well mixed by shaking the burrito slightly before wrapping. This was something that we hadn’t seen done before and it meant that we didn’t end up with just a mouthful of rice!

After our wraps had been filled, we headed over to the salsa section, where we loaded up with salsa picante de chili and chipotle – which both worked really well to complete our Mexican meals.

Although we both loved the burritos and were impressed by how strong the wraps were (no leaks to be seen), we both agreed that the queso was the highlight. It is a melted cheese sauce with jalapeños….. delicious.

Our overall experience at Boojum was great. The food was awesome, but so too were the staff, who were friendly, helpful and offered a super quick service. There is a variety of soft drinks as well as beers, including the popular Corona and Modelo.

We certainly recommend this new Mexican arrival to anyone. We’re looking forward to our next visit, especially to trying out more of the dishes on offer – and of course making sure we have more of that queso!

Boojum also offers a range of vegan, vegetarian and halal-friendly options.

There’s a massive student promotion this month, starting on 22nd. Follow the brand’s @boojummex on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
