The Wonder of Bundobust

Thankfully, times have moved on from having a skinful and a forgettable curry at the end of the evening.

Though I have fond memories of the early 90’s and romantic nights out over a veg korma, Bollywood soundtrack and flock wallpaper, there is still a place in my heart for Naffies, with its draw of a late license.

I’m a little wary of establishments that use the term ‘street food’ in its promotion, but you have to hand it to Bundobust – it’s relaxed, friendly and full of life. The ambience is just as important here as the food. Nothing is rushed and it’s the perfect environment to catch up with friends.

The music policy, like its food, is full of variety, listening to South Asian music on the same playlist as Talking Heads. The price of the food is good, providing encouragement to choose lots of small dishes, including the tasty Halloween special pakoras, a rich, spicy pumpkin wrapped in a crispy spinach pastry.

Everybody shares food. Each dish is fine on its own, but surrounding ourselves with small plates of chole saag, vada pav, okra fries, bhaji’s, tarka dahl and lashings of Bundobust fine pale ale made for a cracking night out.

The key to Bondubust is variety and sharing your food. Nothing is drowned in spice. It’s quality fresh food, each bite filled with colour and exuding passion for flavour.

I love how sociable this space is. The benches place you in close proximity to folks you don’t know, naturally promoting lively conversation and the sharing of food in a community spirit.

I don’t do Bundobust as often as I should. As a vegan, I enjoy a meat-free experience and find this place excitingly different from traditional Indian restaurants. It’s hard to imagine that there are many Leeds folk who don’t already know what I mean, but for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, decide you deserve the treat and get along to the wonderful experience which is Bundobust. Enjoyment guaranteed!
