Crimson is the latest self released EP from Leeds based artist C Silver.
The EP Crimson ( Named after Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James) showcases a new, more mellow sound bound to leave fans wanting more. When talking about Crimson, C Silver describes the creative process as a body of music that he has been writing “subconsciously throughout life – every musical step I have taken has led me up to this body of work.”
Fans of C Silver’s previous releases, tracks such as Crash My Car, All The Things She Said and even as far back as Old Boy will notice the shift in mood on Crimson. There’s a transition from a heavier, darker sound to a much more upbeat vibe. This new sound has pushed boundaries. It shows that just because you have been perceived a certain way doesn’t mean you can’t still play around with things and show things from different angles.
The opening track ‘Lunalight Drive’ shows a POV story of two hopeless romantics dreaming of a new start. “As soon as I started writing to this style of music I fell in love with the contrast of happy summer feel beats to emotional lyrics.” reflects C Silver.
After learning to mix and record solo, a large body of the music created has gone down the DIY route. In a home studio with producer Andy Parkinson is where you will often find the artist playing with samples and looking for beats to use. You will often find a key part of C Silver’s music is the meticulous attention to detail; placement of samples is a common theme throughout the EP. Although Crimson has its foot firmly placed in the bedroom pop genre, which we’re seeing crop up on our timelines more and more, you cannot help but notice the homage to the artist’s earlier influences with the “Happy/Sad” lyrics.
Channeling a mix of Rex Orange County meets Lany, the electro pop styling of Crimson matched with the shoegaze vocals is perfect for listening to on sunny bus rides or just chilling with friends. It’s an effortlessly social EP that doesn’t demand energy to listen to – a metaphorical after party where connections are formed and memories made. It is clear to see that C Silver has perfected his musical skills over the years as Crimson has such a good flow through the electronic beats, which allows the vocals bounce off really well. Moments where this particularly shines are on “Only Temporary (Ft Becks)” and the final track “Colours Of You and Me”.
