The artist will play a very special set at Project House this weekend to test the system in support of MAP Charity’s ‘Save Cosmic Slop’ campaign.
Local youth charity, MAP, is currently raising awareness of its ‘Save Cosmic Slop’ campaign after receiving notice of planning permission for a residential building next door.
The charity is currently facing huge challenges brought on by the announcement of planning permission for 310 flats to be built beside the charity’s home of 18-years, the Grade II listed Hope Foundry in Mabgate, Leeds. The creation of these flats would have a devastating impact on the charity, with balconies from the proposed building overlooking MAP’s courtyard which provides vital access to young people who use the charity’s services, but also provides the outdoor area for the charity’s music event, Cosmic Slop.
Acting as one of the charity’s main streams of fundraising, as well as a way of ensuring the charity remains on the public’s radar, Cosmic Slop is a renowned music event that has seen the likes of Gilles Peterson, Four Tet, Mafalda and Caribou play nights in support of the charity. The proposed new flats could lead to a number of noise complaints from new residents whose homes would overlook the venue, with the potential to cut off the charity’s main fundraising source, as well as a direct impact on the 10 local people employed in the Cosmic Slop event team.
Speaking recently with Resident Advisor, MAP’s Director, Tom Smith said: “The courtyard area is an essential part of the site. It provides access to events and education, as well as being the only outdoor space available to all users – there’s nowhere else to go. Don’t get me wrong – we welcome development in the area, but this could end MAP Charity. The bottom line is, if the planning permission goes through, the potential for noise complaints from new
residents could cut off our main fundraising source—and put ten jobs in the events team at risk.”
As a long-time supporter and guest of Cosmic Slop’s nights, Floating Points has collaborated with the charity to organise a fundraising event at Leeds-based venue, Project House. The event will take place on Sunday 8th September with Floating Points playing an extended set alongside Cosmic Tom. The event will run from 3pm – 10pm on Sunday 8th September at Project House.
