Ghosts of Tradition: Rosier have release their melancholic new single Plus d’amis

“Rosier have always been a precocious band” SONGLINES

“The members of Rosier seem to have definitively found their sound with this bittersweet musical epic” RADIO CANADA

“Rosier weaves a universe where dream-pop and indie electronica shape complex textures, confirming a sound unlike any other, and a truly exceptional one.”  LA PRESSE

Montreal-based collective Rosier‘s gloomy, atmospheric new single “Plus d’amis” featuring acclaimed Québec musician Safia Nolin, was released in February. The track will appear on the deluxe edition of Elle veille encore, slated for release this Autumn.

A dark folk-rock lament sung entirely in French, “Plus d’amis” is stripped-back and distorted, drawing comparisons to Slowdive, Mazzy Star and PJ Harvey with its grunge-infused, shoegaze aesthetic. Time seems to stand still in this piece drawn from archival folk material, drifting into a gentle lethargy while gracefully exploring themes of boredom and despair. Safia Nolin’s voice blends in with disarming ease, creating an enchanting echo of intertwined vocals and hushed, almost spectral textures that linger in space and envelop the listener in deep melancholy.

The track grew out of Rosier’s archival research for their album Elle veille encore, during which the band explored mother figures in folk traditions by digging through written and audio archives of traditional texts from Franco-Canada and France. “We kept finding stories with mothers at the centre,” the band explains. “One recurring theme was the fear and dread of losing your mother, and this song grew out of one of those stories. As it took shape, it developed a deep melancholia and vulnerability that reminded us of Québec musician Safia Nolin, whom we’re huge fans of. We reached out to her, and were so happy when she agreed to sing on the track.”

With its hazy atmosphere and minimalist instrumentation that foregrounds the intertwined vocals, “Plus d’amis” creates an ambiance that is both intimate and spectral—a distinctly 90s-inspired sound that channels raw vulnerability through distorted guitars and atmospheric layers. The track marks a shift toward a more alternative and rock sound for Rosier while maintaining the indie-folk signature that has defined the female-majority quintet.

The band, hailing from Montreal, perfectly embodies the idea of “between tradition and modernity.” With an airy, poetic, and atmospheric sensibility, the quintet brings a distinctive voice to today’s indie folk. Their repertoire of modernized folk-trad songs foregrounds female voices that express contemporary values while remaining deeply rooted in tradition, blending indie textures with subtle pop influences.

This close-knit group has been performing together for over a decade, previously under a different name. Rosier has toured in more than fifteen countries worldwide and received major nominations, including at the ADISQ and the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Their most recent album, Elle veille encore, released in November 2024, explores maternal spirit through an ethereal folk sound infused with dream-pop and indie electronica.

Well-versed in both local and international touring since their beginnings, the band has performed in major cities around the world at events such as SXSW, Edmonton Folk Festival, TSB Festival of Lights and Auckland Folk Festival (New Zealand), Rocky Mountain Folk Festival (USA), Port Fairy and Woodford Folk Festival (Australia), Tønder Folk Festival (Denmark), Festival Pause Guitare (France), Bardentreffen Festival (Germany), Itinerari Folk Festival (Italy), Bromyard Folk Festival (United Kingdom), Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland), and the Jeux de la Francophonie in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), among many others.
