The Future of Music in West Yorkshire

A recent action plan launched by the West Yorkshire Music Network reveals a vision for the future of the music ecosystem in the county.

A new action plan designed to strengthen, connect and grow West Yorkshire’s music ecosystem has been launched by the West Yorkshire Music Network, setting out a shared roadmap for artists, businesses, venues, educators, local authorities, funders and industry partners across the region.

Developed through extensive consultation with music sector stakeholders and open forum outreach sessions, the Action Plan identifies a series of priorities to support a thriving, inclusive and sustainable music ecosystem that enables talent, creativity and enterprise to flourish across Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield.

The plan responds to both the opportunities and challenges facing the sector, recognising music’s significant contribution to the region’s cultural identity, economy, communities and international reputation.

At its heart is a commitment to building a more connected music ecosystem. The Action Plan proposes the development of new regional infrastructure to improve access to information, opportunities, networks and support, helping artists and organisations navigate and contribute to the sector more effectively.

Key priorities include:

  *   Creating a connected regional music information and data infrastructure, including directories, mapping and digital resources to improve visibility and collaboration.

  *   Strengthening collective communications and marketing activity to celebrate local success stories and raise the profile of West Yorkshire nationally and internationally.

  *   Improving collaboration and networking opportunities across the music ecosystem, creating stronger connections amongst artists, venues, promoters, educators and industry professionals.

  *   Supporting place-based approaches to music development through closer collaboration with local authorities and strategic partners.

  *   Improving access to finance, investment and sponsorship opportunities by strengthening relationships between the music sector and public, private and corporate funders.

The Action Plan also recognises the importance of supporting music as both a cultural and economic asset, creating the conditions for sustainable careers, business growth, audience development and inward investment.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire:

“West Yorkshire’s music scene is shimmering with talent, but too often our homegrown artists face unfair barriers – especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. “The West Yorkshire Music Network has put forward concrete proposals for how we can help more of our hardworking and talented creatives to make it here. We will consider these recommendations as part of our creative industries plan and partnership work with the Great North Creative group of Mayors.”
