Local Artist’s Work Part of Leeds Craft Centre and Design Gallery 40th Anniversary Exhibition

Martin Smith’s sculptural automata piece ‘Applause’ is an apt inclusion in the celebratory exhibition at Leeds Craft Centre and Design Gallery.

The Centre and its Home exhibition surely deserve a round of applause for 40 years of providing the public with some fascinating, informative and truly impressive displays of skill and creativity. Martin himself first worked with the Gallery in 1996, RIngs & Moving Things, 1999 Menagerie and 1999 A Retrospective Future.

The gallery is thrilled to see Martin’s return to the gallery with his amazing sculptural automata in their anniversary year.  Martin is an artist whose research and work are concerned with people’s perception and interpretation of space.  He undertakes large architectural commissions that interact with their given space and the viewer through mechanical movement.  Alongside this work, his practice is also concerned with making kinetic devices that investigate themes of repetition, precision and rules.

Martin’s money collecting kinetic sculpture is at the Thackray Museum of Medicine in Roundhay.  The piece is ‘The Cashless Cache Machine’ and is activated by contactless card payment.

Martin’s collection here in Leeds, sits alongside the work of 13 other makers carefully chosen to show that there really is no place like home; comforting textiles, humorous sculpture and collectable ceramics all feature celebrating well established makers and some brand new to the gallery.
