Welcoming Northlight to Chapel Allerton

The Chapel Allerton Arts Trail last weekend saw the first opportunity to visit Northlight. Located at 31 Potternewton Lane, the arts centre will be based in the once popular Shoulder of Mutton pub which was until recently the home of Inkwell Arts. It will provide a comprehensive service where artists can create and collaborate.

On Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August, the building – still in the early stages of being prepared for its new life – displayed work by artists Diane ShiLLito, Richard Locket and Ann Waddington. A large gallery with plenty of natural light enabled them to display their art on walls, tables and stands.

The work of the three artists complimented one another well. Richard’s clear cut graphics added lines and colour, Diane’s fabric prints brought more natural tones and designs, whilst Ann combined nature and vibrancy in her landscapes.

Visitors were also able to purchase refreshments from an adjoining café area. Again, this space is very much in its embryonic stage, having opened only for the two days of the Art Trail, to provide refreshments for any visitors prior to the official opening in September. Visitors could enjoy their drinks and baked goods whilst appreciating views of art on the walls and a grassed outside area. By next summer, the outside area will also be available for events.

The official opening of Northlight will be on Saturday 10th September. Members of the public are invited to an open weekend, which will be held on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th. Expect live music and – weather permitting – some outdoor dining on the newly refurbished patio. The venue is easily accessed by public transport and has plenty of onsite parking.

Once open, it is hoped that this will become a hub for artists, and the community generally. A large room at the front of the building can be hired for meetings, workshops or other events. Pop in during the opening weekend to view and chat about local art, take a look around the building and enjoy some refreshments. Or if you’re looking for a studio, a place to run a workshop or to hold an event, give Tim a call on 07834 704444.
