Beabadoobee – Debut Album Released

I’ve just watched single Worth It video from Fake It Flowers, Beabadoobee’s debut album which was released on 16 October.

It’s set in what looks like an outdated motel bedroom and is directed by duo Bedroom. It’s the third single from the album. Watch it here.

The video reveals Beabadoobee’s impressive confidence, although it’s not the first time she’s collaborated with Bedroom and it shows. Alongside the energy she commits, there’s a relaxed vibe – I think she trusts her directors – which somehow counters the angst of the lyrics:

‘You say that you’re breaking up
Connection too slow
So just try texting again
Don’t pick up the phone
Don’t think we can be friends
‘Cause you’re too pretty
I wanna see you again
I don’t know what I’m saying’

Bea says: “Worth It is simply about teenage infidelity and the mistakes one can make when they’re tempted to do things. It’s a bit of a confession song but also an understanding that it’s a part of life.”

Worth It follows two singles – ‘Care’ was labelled by Annie Mac as the Hottest Record in The World and has been streamed 3 million times and more – and ‘Sorry’, reviewed by The Guardian as a masterfully restrained expression of regret, eventually pushing sardonic 90s alt-rock into the sky-splitting territory”. Others have also been impressed:

Phenomenal …” VOGUE

Galaxy-class starry-eyed swoon-pop …” THE GUARDIAN

A bedroom wall-of-sound classic, built to echo on infinite repeat …” NEW YORKER

The spirit of Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus has regenerated itself in 2020 as a bleach-haired teenager …” DAZED

Beabadoobee provides a score to the lives of her teenage fans; she gives 90s alt-rock a cinematic sheen …” THE FADER

Intimate, close confessional vocals matched with stargazy guitars … a DIY sense of rawness, unaffected by industry bullshit or concerns over streaming algorithms …” i-D

Beabadoobee has a tour of headline shows for 2021 – The Fake It Flowers 14 date tour of the UK and Ireland. Buy tickets here.
